Legend of the Pink Dolphins

A picture of a Pink Dolphin from the lodge's library - as we were not quick enough with our own cameras!

This mural is on display at the Iquitos airport.  We spotted it on our way back to Lima and thought it might be in reference to the legend our guide told us.

While watching pink dolphins, our guide told us a local legend.  He explained that years ago, if a woman had a child out of wedlock, it was sometimes said that the child had been fathered by a pink dolphin.  Legend has it that pink dolphins are magic and can transform themselves into well-dressed gentlemen - always wearing a hat to cover their telltale blowhole.  According to our guide, as recently as thirty years ago, birth certificates would sometimes give "Delfin" (meaning dolphin in Spanish) as the father's name.
